It is estimated that around 70 percent of all the money in a casino comes through the slot machines. This is exactly the reason why so many improvements have been carried out on the slot machine, to make it as random and as secure as possible.

It was in 1887 that the first iteration of the modern slot machine was invented. The first iteration was equipped with three reels which would spin and the concept, however, till now remains that all the faces displayed to the player have to be the same. The amount of money which is to be paid out depends on the symbol or character obtained. This concept has been carried over to five or more reels in modern casinos. The slots are operated through a coin or more recently using bills or tickets. The slot machine recognizes the coin or bill and depending upon the credit value inserted, the availability or magnitude of bonus and money to be won is decided. Recent multi denomination slot machines allow the player to decide the denomination he wishes to wage per round instead of searching for machines offering specific denominations. The slot of course is triggered with the help of the legendary lever on the side or by using a button on the front panel. With the advent of the slot machine, tricks were designed to beat the system, many involving coins that would weigh more and thereby enabling a higher wager on the machine. This however was addressed, and recent slot machines come with fool proof bill or ticket format insertion. Since its invention there have been several revisions to the design as well as each country having its own style of slots.
The slot machine deserves a place in history as the sole icon that drove the casino business into a money making machine. As revisions keep on coming in the form of video slots etc, it only certifies the slot machine’s draw in the 300 billion dollar casino industry.
